I am a really lucky guy. I have 4 guys that are going through this thing with me. When I say ‘this thing’ I don’t mean just being pregnant, I mean a bunch of other things as well. Two of the guys work with me and the other one I have been friends with since high school. They are great guys, and come from all different perspectives. But most important of all we all just seem to loosen up and have a good time when talking about our wives and the kids.
A while ago we all decided to do Daddy Boot Camp through the Women and Babies Hospital in Lancaster. The plan was hatched at a dinner we all had together, or right after. I had already been signed up and not wanting to sit through the class alone, I roped the other three in.
We all decided it would be fun to grab dinner (and drinks) before hand. I think I got more out of that then the actual class. Unfortunately the normal instructor for our class wasn’t there and a fill in had to come in. I really expected a bit more instruction and hands on learning. I was disappointed overall.
The first part of the class was a Q&A with 2 dads that had been through the course and now had their babies. I liked hearing what they went through, but the overwhelming vibe of their message was that it varies greatly from one situation to another.
Then we had a lengthy lecture with the replacement leader. Unfortunately I only remember 2 things of what he said. #1 Be supportive and do everything your wife asks. Duh. #2 A lot of affairs start during the first pregnancy. People are selfish. No breaking news there either.
The last 10 minutes of class we played with the dolls trying to figure out swaddling and diaper changing. I didn’t learn any skills here as we were kind of just thrown the dolls and told to have at it. I did learn that my buddy Bill can change a diaper in 30 seconds one handed.
Anyway, I didn’t get much out of the class. If I was to give you any advice, I would say skip the class and spend a bit more time at the restaurant with some good guys.
Our next adventure will be childbirth classes and a newborn care class. Hopefully we get more out of those! More on those later, but for now, thats all I got.
